Crosstown Dental Group has been welcoming new patients and families from the Concourse Avenue area and across Shelby County for years, and we built our entire new patient process around one goal: making your first visit easy, informative, and free of unpleasant surprises.

Your First Visit

What to Expect at Your First Appointment

Your first visit with us is built to do two things: get to know your dental history and goals, and give you a clear, honest picture of where your oral health stands today. Nothing about it is rushed. Most new patient appointments take between sixty and ninety minutes, depending on whether x-rays or a deeper cleaning are needed. Here is how the visit typically unfolds:

Check-In & Paperwork

We will confirm your insurance details, review your medical history form, and answer any questions before you are called back.

Digital X-Rays

Low-radiation digital imaging gives our dentists a clear view of what's happening below the gum line, including early decay or bone loss.

Exam & Cleaning

A thorough exam of your teeth, gums, and bite, followed by a professional cleaning to remove plaque and tartar buildup.

Personalized Plan

We walk you through any findings in plain language and build a treatment plan around your priorities, timeline, and budget.

We know dental anxiety is real, and we never want it to keep someone from getting care they need. If you are nervous about needles, sounds, or just being in the chair, tell our team when you arrive. We will slow things down, explain each step before we do it, and give you breaks whenever you need them. You can also browse our full range of services ahead of time so you know what options are available if treatment beyond a cleaning is recommended.

Paperwork & Payment

New Patient Forms, Insurance, and Fees

We would rather you spend your appointment talking with your dentist than filling out forms in the waiting room. That is why we ask new patients to complete their paperwork online before arriving whenever possible. It takes about ten minutes and covers your medical history, current medications, and any dental concerns you want to flag before the exam begins.

  • Medical and dental history form - shared conditions, allergies, and medications help us plan your care safely.
  • Photo ID and insurance card - bring both to your appointment, or have them ready for a phone photo if you submit forms online.
  • Insurance verification - our front desk confirms your benefits before your visit so there are no surprises at checkout.

We work with most major PPO insurance plans and are happy to file claims on your behalf. For details on which carriers we accept and how coverage typically works for cleanings, fillings, and larger procedures, visit our insurance page. If you do not have dental insurance, that is not a barrier to care here. We will give you a clear, itemized estimate before any treatment begins, and we can talk through financing or phased treatment options that fit your budget.

For new patients coming in with no prior insurance verification or specific concerns, a standard new patient exam, necessary x-rays, and cleaning typically falls within a predictable, modest range. Costs vary based on the amount of buildup present and whether any additional treatment like a deeper cleaning is needed, but our team will always confirm pricing with you before moving forward with anything beyond the initial exam.

A Few Tips Before You Come In

  • Arrive fifteen minutes early if you have not completed your paperwork online, so you are not rushed through the forms.
  • Note any pain or sensitivity you've noticed, even if it seems minor, so we can take a closer look during your exam.
  • Bring a current medication list, including supplements, so we can flag anything relevant to your dental treatment.
  • Bringing kids along? Let us know ahead of time so we can plan a gentle, age-appropriate first visit for them, too.

Questions New Patients Ask

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to call ahead, or can I book my first appointment online?

Either works well for us. You can request an appointment directly through our online scheduling page, and a member of our team will confirm your time within one business day. If you would rather talk to someone first, or need to get in quickly, call us at (901) 881-1234 and our front desk will find a time that works around your schedule.

What should I bring to my first new patient appointment?

Please bring a photo ID, your dental insurance card if you have one, and a list of any medications or supplements you take regularly. If you have recent x-rays from a previous dentist, bringing those along (or having them sent ahead of time) can save you an extra set of images. Completing your new patient forms online beforehand is the single biggest time-saver on the day of your visit.

Do you accept my dental insurance, and what if I don't have coverage?

We accept most major PPO dental insurance plans and will verify your specific benefits before your appointment so you know what to expect at checkout. Details on accepted carriers are on our insurance page. If you do not have insurance, we will still see you. Our team provides clear, written estimates before any treatment, and we can discuss payment options that spread out larger procedures if needed.

How long does a first visit usually take?

Plan on sixty to ninety minutes for your first visit. That window covers check-in, digital x-rays, a full exam and cleaning, and time to go over any findings with your dentist in detail. If something beyond a routine cleaning is needed, like a filling or deeper cleaning, we will usually schedule that as a separate visit so your first appointment stays unhurried.

Can you see my whole family, including young children?

Yes. Many of our new patients come to us as families, and we are glad to schedule parents and kids on the same day whenever possible to save everyone a trip. For a child's first visit, let our scheduling team know ahead of time so we can plan a relaxed, age-appropriate appointment and introduce them to the office gradually.

I haven't been to a dentist in years. Will I be judged for that?

Not at all, and this is one of the most common situations we see. Life gets busy, and dental visits often fall to the bottom of the list. Our team's job is to help you move forward from where you are today, not to make you feel uncomfortable about the past. We will walk through your exam results calmly, prioritize what matters most, and build a plan that fits your timeline and comfort level.
